My Best Buy Visa Card review

For the frequent Best Buy shopper, the My Best Buy Visa Card from Citi offers plenty of rewards at not only Best Buy, but anywhere you shop.

With no annual fee, it can make a great addition to your wallet. Here's what this card has to offer.

My Best Buy Credit Card rewards

So what will you earn for rewards on all of your purchases?

There's lots of rewards you'll earn with this card, and not just at Best Buy either:

  • 2.5 points per $1 spent at Best Buy, which is increased to 3 points for Elite Plus members,
  • 1.5 points per $1 spent on gas,
  • 1 point per $1 spent at restaurants, and
  • 1 point per $2 spent everywhere else.

Once you've earned 250 points, you can use them to get $5 off at Best Buy – a value of 2 cents a point.

That means you're getting a 5% return at Best Buy, while earning up to 3% back on your other purchases.

My Best Buy Credit Card financing options

For large Best Buy purchases, you've got no interest financing available to you as well.

Here's the terms and what you have to buy to get access to these financing options:

  • 12 month financing on all storewide purchases greater than $299.
  • 24 month financing on appliance, home theatre, unlocked phones, exercise equipment, and Geek Squad purchases greater than $999.

There's also other special financing offers that come from time to time as well.

How does it work? To avoid paying any interest, you simply have to pay for your purchase in full before the end of the promotion date. During the period, you can pay as much or as little as you like during your financing period (with the caveat that you need to make at least your minimum monthly payment). If you fail to do so, you'll pay accrued interest on your purchase.

This page has examples to show you how it works.

If you have a large purchase coming up, it can be a great way to spread out your payments, rather than having to pay it all at once.

A point to note – If you take advantage of special financing, you won't earn Best Buy Rewards on your purchase.

My Best Buy Credit Card drawbacks

The My Best Buy Card isn't without its drawbacks, however. Here are some things to consider with this card.

You won't earn rewards on Best Buy purchases when you take advantage of special financing

Unfortunately, when it comes to special financing, you can't have your cake and eat it too. If you do special financing with your Best Buy card, you won't be able to earn rewards as well. You have to choose one or the other – special financing or earn rewards.

No included insurance

Even the most basic insurance coverages, such as extended warranty and purchase protection, aren't included with the card.

No other included perks

Besides the no interest financing, there are no other perks included with this credit card.

Rewards are limited to Best Buy purchases

While you're earning plenty of rewards, you'll be limited to using them at Best Buy.

High interest rates

Apart from the special financing features on Best Buy purchases, this card has a single, high purchase APR rate (you can view the current rate in the card details box above). There's no variable purchase interest rate for those with better credit scores. And, there's no cash advance or balance transfer rate.

Alternative cash back credit cards

Bottom line

For the Best Buy shopper (even if only on occasion), the My Best Buy Visa Card can be a great addition to your wallet. With a 5% return at Best Buy, and no annual fee, there's a lot to like about this card.

But if you don't regularly shop at Best Buy, you're probably better off with a different credit card.
